The personality

Have you ever noticed how often the worst part of a person’s personality is also what is best for them? It may be that you meet an accountant whose retentive-anal character makes him obsessed with details and unable to tell (or understand) a joke, but in fact that’s what makes him the perfect accountant. Or maybe you have an extravagant aunt, who lives leaving people embarrassed by talking too much, but which is also the joy of parties. The same duality applies to our species.

Our brains

In addition to the pineal gland and lymph, the nature of our bipartite brain (twin hemispheres) has recently attracted the attention of many medical researchers. Ornstein and others have found that the left hemisphere is more concerned with verbal and intellectual activities, while the right hemisphere is more capable of dealing with visual and creative work. For centuries, the science of swaryoga has applied this knowledge of the cerebral hemispheres and even determined the specific functions of each hemisphere.

The materialism

Humans have evolved into small social groups in which image and status are of prime importance, not only for survival, but also to attract partners, impress friends and raise children. Nowadays, we adorn ourselves with goods and services more to impress others than to enjoy having a piece of material – which makes “materialism” a deeply misleading expression for much of consumption. Many products are primarily signs, and only in the background do they take on the appearance of material objects. Our vast sociopathic brain has evolved toward a prevailing social goal: to make others beautiful. And buying impressive products in a money-based economy is just the latest way to achieve that goal.

The examination of intelligence

Notice how your discernment is most developed – whether in the choice of food, movies, sex, sports, scientific information, politics, the arts, philosophy, or spiritual knowledge. Find out in what aspect your intelligence manifests itself in the most refined, clear, and profound way. Observe whether you have cultivated an outward sense of discrimination, developing opinions about people or situations, or an inner sense, learning to discern the inner truth or reality of things.
Watch out for the natural course of your discernment – if you tend, for example, to calculation, most of the time. Observe when you exercise your sense of choice, value, and judgment. Through this process, you are able to understand the nature of your intelligence and how it develops.
